Christ's thorn
Paliurus spina-christi; May 2004

Christ's thorn is an appropriately spiny member of the Rhamnaceae, with distinctive zigzag young stems, small yellowish flowers and odd, flying-saucer shaped circular fruits. Found on the inland margins of Skala Potamias beach and in the flat land behind.

Thasos buttercup
Ranunculus thasius; May 2004

A small buttercup endemic to Thasos and the North and Central Aegean. In Thasos, usually found in higher altitude rock crevices, mostly in semi-shaded areas.

sage
Salvia amplexicaulis; May 2004

An attractive sage, common in some of the fields behind Skala Potamias beach.

rose campion
Silene coronaria; May 2004

Formerly called Lychnis coronaria and a popular garden plant, the rose campion is native to Thasos and often found in sheltered clearings in woodland

Silene subconica; May 2004

This catchfly is found on Thasos' beaches, filling the ecological niche taken elsewhere in Greece by S. colorata. Unlike the latter species, the seed pods of S. subconica inflate as they ripen.

silver lime
Tilia tomentosa; May 2004

The silver lime is a native woodland tree in Thasos, although no longer very common there. This fine specimen is near Agios Dimitrios. There is another in the churchyard at Potamia. Smaller trees can be seen on the cliffs on the northeast face of Mt Ypsario.

spotted rockrose
Tuberaria guttata; May 2004

The petals of the annual spotted rockrose sometimes have a single dark spot at the base; sometimes, as here, most of the basal half of the petal is dark. On hot sunny days, the flowers loose their petals early in the day, and the plants then become far less conspicuous.

heart's-ease
Viola tricolor; May 2004

This pretty heart's-ease flowers in huge quantities on higher altitude limestone, in shades of cream, yellow and lilac, particularly around Mt Profitis Ilias.
