Silene italica is a perennial catchfly, It makes a low-growing clump, c. 20cm high by 30cm across, of loose leaf-rosettes. Above this appear 20-40cm stems bearing 10-20mm-diameter white or very pale pink flowers in April and May. The flowers open at night and can be strongly scented; they close during the sunnier part of the day. My oldest plant here is 40cm high by 60cm across after 14 years.
Easily grown in a reasonably-drained soil; if grown in light shade the flowers will remain open for longer during the day. It has been hardy here in Norfolk for a number of winters, and has been completely unaffected by -6C in 2010 and 2011. It doesn't spread a lot so could be grown on a rockery, although it will self-sow a little (and might do more on a very light soil). The lower stems are woody but thin and slightly fragile - they might not survive a large boot, dog or football landing on them. In a position that is slightly sheltered, from high winds and full summer sun, it tolerates drought well.
Sow the seeds when received, individually in small pots, or in situ. The seedlings are small initially, so if using a soil-less compost, sieve out any large pieces and perhaps add a little sand if available. Plant out carefully from small pots, avoiding root-damage, when large enough.
My plants originated as seed from Corfu in Greece. However, I do also have - about 5m distant - a plant of the same species but originating in SW. Turkey, so cross-pollination may occur and this seed should not be regarded as of genetically-pure Corfu provenance.
