Hello Lance. I have just returned from a lovely trip to Greece and we used your fab map of the Pilion Peninsula. I just wanted to say thanks so much for doing it. It was a pleasure to use such an accurate map. Jacqui C., August 2008.

Tsangarada square and plane tree - photo © Kees Ulenkate 2008 kalderimi path - photo © Kees Ulenkate 2008We just returned from our spring-holiday in Greece, which we spent mainly in the Pilion. We enjoyed some of your wonderfully described walks around Tsangarada. As suggested in your guide, I prepared the walks the day before, by reading the description carefully. This appeared to be essential not to spoil the walk with too frequent stops for orientation. The walks were exactly as described in you guide and we were impressed by the beauty of this part of Greece. I added some pictures. K.U, Leiden, Netherlands, June 2008.

We have just come back from Parga and I wanted to express my thanks... we were able to purchase the booklet, just as you had described, in Parga and we were able to enjoy some wonderful walks. Well described, a few little hiccups on some walks, largely due to the change in the terrain but otherwise superb. J.P, June 2008.

We have just returned from our holiday in Kos. The walking was very enjoyable thanks to your book and map. You never disappoint us. L. & J.W, Burnley, June 2008.

We enjoyed our trip to La Palma earlier this year. Your plant checklist was very useful. D. & V.R, Bakewell, May 2008.

I would like to order another one of your excellent walks publications. G.L, Gateshead, May 2008.

Please will you send us the book and map of walks in Kos. We value the information provided by Lance and have never been disappointed. L. & J.W, Burnley, May 2008.

Thank you very much for your books and maps on Stoupa and Plakias which you have sent us in the past. They have made our holidays enjoyable and memorable.

We found your Agios Georgios [Corfu] map great, when we stayed at Theo's... My wife and I found the walks from Agios Georgios so good it's now the first thing we look for - to see if there is one of Lance's books (I suppose we should do it the other way around and see what books he has and then book the holiday).

Just a thank you note for the great little book. We used it on four of the days of our week in Symi and it was lovely to be able to walk about the island. We will be going back next year to do some more. I think your timings must relate to runners though!

Thank you so much for your excellent [Kokkari, Samos] map, which has given me a lot of good walking over the past few days. [Postcard sent from Kokkari, September 2007]

Many thanks for your assistance and your contribution to by far the best guide book available on Crete.

In the end we did two of your [Parga] walks. One was from the bakery to Lichnos beach (that was an excellent walk) and the other was from Valtos beach to Sarakiniko beach. The last one was the best walk in my life!! We stopped at Agios Sostis beach for a few hours as it was totally empty. It felt like our own private beach and it was just so beautiful. Thank you again for your excellent walk book (we bought it at the bookshop for 10 euros by the way).

Just a quick email to say how helpful your 'Walks in Northwest Corfu' map and booklet were to my wife and I on our recent holiday to Agios Georgios North, Corfu. We purchased the map and booklet from you in January for our holiday in June this year, we stayed at Theo's Hotel. It was the second time that we had stayed at that resort, however this time your maps and guide booklet enabled us to enjoy a whole new dimension to our holiday that we would not otherwise have enjoyed. We particularly enjoyed the cliff path to Makrades walk. Can you recommend any other particular publication/location from your website?

We have just spent a week in Parga and your book of walks really made our holiday. It was an excellent companion and added greatly to our enjoyment. Many thanks, and feel free to quote us. M. & C. B, London

I have found your plant lists very helpful on my holidays in the Mediterranean and Canary Islands. They add greatly to the interest and pleasure.

I received your [Olu Deniz] book last week and love it! Just bought a villa in Hisaronu and am sending a copy of the book to my parents as well! Thanks a lot!

During a two-week holiday in Parga I spotted your walkers guide in one of the bookshops and bought it. After one week on the beaches this was the thing I needed. I have made four of the trips and I have not seen such an accurate and complete description. Your map is also excellent. Let me thank you for your effort of publishing the guide. I have listed the website under my favorites. [From the Netherlands]

Having enjoyed your previous walk books on Crete, Samos and Parga, please find cheque for Walks in Stoupa as I am already planning for next year.

We had great fun in the Pilion with your book - many thanks. Please send the Turkey book soon... P.S. And the Symi map is great.

Many thanks for your excellent [Plakias] books/maps. The walk from Koxare - 10/10.

Having bought your book earlier this year to take to Symi with us we would like to say how very precise and informative it proved to be together with a map that gave accurate routes and positions of the road, paths, turnings, churches etc. ... We have had another publication in the past but not to the high standard of this. Thank you for adding to the enjoyment of our time on Symi this time, 2nd visit this year, 14th visit in 6 years.

Once again I am indebted to you for inspiring me to holiday in two previously unknown locations - La Gomera and Olu Deniz. Your walk books of these areas, and the associated map of La Gomera enable us to enrich our time in these beautiful locations by walking the pathways you so clearly and accurately describe. I take every opportunity to publicise your books and maps because I so much admire your skills as a geographer and botanist.

We have just returned from 2 weeks walking on Kalymnos, and your book (purchased last August) proved invaluable to us! It was excellent! Walk 8 to the Agia Ekaterini Monastery/Kefala Cave was by far the best walk which we did twice! ... We are going to another Greek island next year, but only one where you have written a walking guide!

Many thanks for your [Stoupa] book. I found it to be of great assistance ... keeping me on the right path and also in providing useful information on the surrounding villages.

Thank you very much for the invaluable plant checklist.

We want to tell you that for [us] this guide made our [Lesvos] holiday very successful and special. Your descriptions are very clear and accurate and we enjoyed the old kalderimi and villages in the mountains we should not have seen without it. The explanations about nature and landscape were very welcome. [From the Netherlands]

What a pleasure it was to have an accurate map.

My wife and I had a wonderful walking holiday in Plakias, thanks to your excellent book.

Thank you for documenting such wonderful walks - they made our holiday.

I am writing to say how much we enjoyed following the walks in Stoupa. This greatly enriched our exploration of the area. [We] fortunately found your Thasos walks book. [We] found the guidance very clear and easy to follow, it saved us time on the reconnaissance of a new area and enhanced the enjoyment of the holiday.

We really appreciated your book of [Stoupa] walks and were thrilled to have a guide to help us explore the area and its flora.

I enthuse over your lovely map and book - it is beautifully produced and most informative.

We visited Kokkari and found your walk guide and map extremely useful; they added greatly to the pleasure of our holiday.

On our previous two visits to Greece (Pefkos and Stoupa) we had enormous pleasure in following your walks, as keen walkers we have always walked on our visits to Greece - discovering your guide books has added a new dimension.

... how useful I have found the map and booklet. They have added considerably to our enjoyment of the holidays in Plakias.

... want to thank for all your work producing the [Kokkari] map and book of walks. Without them we would have been confined to the monotonous dust roads or got lost, as our experiences on other islands.

I used one of your walk books and not only were the walks most enjoyable, the clarity of the instructions were second to none. Thank you.

As an ex Ordnance Survey surveyor, I was most impressed with the first map I have seen in Greece which inspired some confidence! Well done!!

We have just returned from our first holiday in Corfu and felt that we must write and congratulate you on your book, 'Walks in the Ag. Georgious Area'. We found the walks very easy to follow with the accompanying map and recommend it to others.

I wanted to thank you for your publication 'Ten Walks in the Plakias Area' as it added so much enjoyment to our holiday... Once again, many thanks for sharing your knowledge of Plakias, your remarks make the walks all more enjoyable.

For two weeks we stay at Plakias and did a lot of your walks. We found your map very useful and we saw a lot of walkers with your map. The countryside of Plakias in spring is wonderful and because of your suggestions we walked more than we had thought to when at home in Germany (Munich). We like to thank you very much.

We have just returned from a week based in Damouchari [Pilion], having used extensively the recently purchased booklet. I would like to feed back our appreciation of this guide, which reflected the reality on the ground so closely. Thank you very much.

We have found your book and maps extremely useful on previous holidays.

Thank you for sending [to me in Germany] the Agios Georgios walks booklet so quickly. It will help me bridge the time before I actually go there.

We have seen your map and consider it the best we have seen in our 30 visits to the Greek islands! We shall be recommending your publications to friends, as one did to us.

Love your books!

We found your Georgioupolis walks book excellent.

Great time in Elounda last year using your book and maps. Many thanks.

Myself and my wife C.... had fantastic enjoyment in using your guides in Lesvos, Olu Deniz and Thasos.

We were in Plakias earlier this year and found your map and walks invaluable.

My wife and I both really enjoyed the walks (in Plakias).

I bought the book Walks in Lefkada last year and it was most helpful when planning our walks. Could you please supply me with Walks in Parga.

Thank you once more for the perfect guidance. [from the Netherlands]

We received the books this morning. Love the new look [covers]! Thanks very much.

However, not everyone is impressed, so in the interest of fairness we include the following (minority) criticism:

While in Plakias I have bought the hiking booklets by Lance Chilton and his Plakias Walkers' Map. While I have found the hiking trails descriptions of some use, I have found the map absolutely useless. In years of hiking in Austria, Germany, Czechoslovakia and other European countries I have never come across such a useless map, showing very clearly the surfaced and unsurfaced roads in glowing colours, but indicating the walks (which are the sole reason for the map) as thin black lines. I want to share with you my utter disappointment about the map and the waste of money in purchasing it.
