Parga walk book - updates 2007 and earlier
UPDATE September 2007 to book dated 2005
Walk 2 Valtos Beach to Panagia tis Vlahernon final para.
Where the track swings inland and joins another track (at a T-junction), this is about 1.85km from the monastery path - do not turn off onto a side track at an earlier, inland loop of the track about 1km from the monastery path.
Walk 3 Valtos Beach to Anthousa para 3.
One of the ruined mill buildings, Louka's Mill, has now been restored as a working watermill.
Walk 4b Sarakiniko Beach to Agios Sostis.
The surfaced road now reaches the southern end of Sarakiniko Beach.
Walk 5 Anthousa to Anthousa Castle para 2.
Where you "go back right towards a house", this is the tall gabled house at the end of the road.
Walk 6 Anthousa to Mt Pargas para 5.
The zigzag track is now fenced but can be accessed at the far right corner however the route up from Agia village is now preferable.
Walk 8 Parga to Zozefina to Panagia para 5.
The once ruined church, Agia Kyriaki, has been restored.
Walk 12 Agia Kyriaki to Livadari para 5.
The dirt track from the col above Agia Kyriaki to Livadari was being worked on in Autumn 2007, and is possibly to be asphalted. The steep dirt track that would have been your returning upward route is currently inaccessible so you should return from Eleftheri by your outward route.
Walk l4 Eleftheri to Lykhnos is no longer practical.
Walk 16 Glyki to Aherondas Gorge para 4.
The descending, fenced path (after the cliff path) has collapsed - use the unfenced path or the tunnel.
Walks 16/17. The smaller bridge crossing the Tsangariotiko side-stream at the Dalla mill, swept away by floods in winter 2004/2005, has not been repaired. It is necessary to wade to get across - but be aware that rain in the valley to the north (left) could increase the water depth dramatically.
Walk 17 Aherondas Gorge to Kiafa para 3.
The picnic table and pavilion are now broken and unrecognizable.
Walk 18 Ammoudia para 3. The dirt road down to Ammoudia is surfaced except for a very short strip at the top junction with the main road.

UPDATE May 2005 to earlier book
Taxis. English-speaking Tasos Tousis (and his son Vassilis) now have taxi number TAZ-9149.
Arrival. The ferry between Preveza airport and Preveza has ben replaced by a tunnel, and therefore the route to Parga no longer goes past the ruins of Nikopolis.
Walk 1. Parga castle. The restored barrack buildings have been converted into a café-chocolateria.
Walk 2. Panagias tou Vlahernon. The mattress-spring gate is no longer operational and the gateway is open.
Walk 3. Last paragraph. The small path off the left-hand side of the road runs to the right of a children's playground.
Walk 5. Anthousa Castle. After going through the front entrance, turn right and then left into a second courtyard.
Walk 7. Above Agia, third paragraph. The stony, red-earth path starts through an opening in the fence to the right.
Walk 8. The wooden causeway to Piso Krioneri beach has been replaced by a concrete flood-channel.
3rd paragraph. There is much new holiday accommodation in this area, so you should now "turn off left immediately beyond a new building" not "beyond a campsite".
Panagia Church. Just after the formal fountain, the small dirt track/stone path have been replaced by a steep concrete road - join this, then go left then right. At the end of the road, join a small path to the right of a fence - this leads to the church.
Walk 9. The town hall is now behind Kryoneri beach.
Walk 10. Third paragraph. The dry stream-bed crossing is now a dirt track and the area beyond was being cleared of olive trees in May 2005. The path started along the steep right-hand side of the cleared area.
Same paragraph. "After a level stretch...downhill through shrubs" should now read: "After a comparatively level stretch of path leftwards around the contour of the valley, you reach a junction, below some tall cypress trees, where straight on goes into an olive field and right goes up beside an overgrown hedge (of which the cypresses are part). The correct route is up alongside the hedge, since the field is private, however the field is currently the most used route - both reach the same point higher up the slope, where the path levels out and goes left.
Walk 12. Some Parga-Igoumenitsa (and vice-versa) buses call in to Eleftheri - so could be used for Walks 12 and 13 - but confirm times before travelling.
The path, opposite the Pyrgi tower, to the lake, is now closed off with barbed wire.
The observation tower at the lake viewpoint was extremely wobbly in May 2005 and climbing on it is not recommended!
The old dirt track from the tall ash tree is now, essentially a broad, hedged, slightly overgrown path. The first broad diagonal track has an accompanying ditch to be crossed by a ramshackle bridge. The second broad track also has a ditch but no bridge and you must scramble across (if this is impossible, return to the first track and follow this left, to Eleftheri). Having crossed the second broad track, go left as far as a surfaced road, then turn left here and follow this into Eleftheri.
Walk 14. The amount of rubbish dumped in the gully at the end of the path between the Agios Nikolaos chapel and the surfaced road to the rubbish tip will deter all but the most intrepid of walkers. Unfortunately there is no practical nearby alternative and this leaves the walk as two attractive but disconnected halves.
Walk 16. The last section of road to Dina's taverna is now surfaced.
Walks 16/17. The smaller bridge crossing the Tsangariotiko side-stream at the Dalla mill was swept away by floods in winter 2004/2005. A makeshift tangle of branches now replaces it - wading may be simpler if the water is not too strong or deep.
Walk 18. Amoudia's information centre is seasonal only - it was closed in early May 2005.
