Plant list for Parga

front cover of book
This booklet lists plant species recorded from the Parga region of northwest mainland Greece, between 1999-2007, plus recent literature records.

The Parga area, as defined in this book, includes:

Agia, Agia Kyriaki, Anthousa, Eleftheri, Lake Kalodiki, Lykhnos, Morfio, Parga, Mt Pargas, Pyrgi, Sarakiniko, Trikorfo and Valtos; plus, to the east
... the Aherondas delta area, including Amoudia, Mesopotamo and Valanidorrahi;
... the Stena Aherondas gorge area, including Glyki;
... the Souli area, including Kaiafa Castle and Samoniva.

Botanical and Wildlife Highlights. Although the countryside around Parga has many olive groves, the coastline has a lush, Mediterranean maquis flora. A riverine flora lines the stream that runs down from Anthousa to Valtos. The first line of hills inland has few trees, but a number of small upland meadows with flowers and sometimes tortoises. Behind these hills, particularly around the Margariti plateau and Lake Kalodiki, the flora changes from Mediterranean to Central Balkan, with many interesting plants to be found, plus nesting storks on chimneys and telegraph poles around the villages. In addition to the floral interest, fireflies appear above meadows after dark.

Lake Kalodiki (Kalodiki Fen). The southern end of the inland Margariti plateau, to the east of Parga, floods in winter and at least part of this 2km2 lake remains into the summer. Almost unique in Greece, it covers 3.5-7m of peat. The nature reserve here is famous for its white waterlilies, rare water plants, and wildlife including swans, kingfishers, coypu, frogs and snakes.

Aherondas Gorge. Where the Aherondas (Acheron) river cuts through the Souliot mountains, a deep valley has been formed, narrowing to a spectacular vertical-sided gorge where the river empties onto the Fanari plain (the now-drained lake Aherousia) at Glyki. The river has its own endemic fish, a small goby. After meandering to the southwest, the river reaches the sea at the Amoudia delta. The wooded area of the valley and the delta are protected areas.

Book first published 2005, updated 2005-2011.

The 28-page plant checklist is a text-only A5 booklet with a card cover, listing species and subspecies recorded for the area. It is arranged alphabetically by and within families, with current taxonomy, scientific synonymy, English names where known, and endemic species marked as such. The booklet is supplied in a tough A5 plastic sleeve.
