Walks in Parga (book and map)

walk book and double-sided map
List of walks - pdf

This book describes twenty walks in the Parga area of Ipiros in western mainland Greece.

Parga, on Greece's west coast, faces across the water to the Ionian Islands of Paxos (Paxi) and Andipaxos (Andipaxi). The old town is situated in a short valley, between the eastern rim of Valtos Bay and the olive-tree clad Lithitsa hill, with newer extensions into the long Kryoneri valley to the east. The headland between the town and Valtos is guarded by the large castle.

Unlike many Greek resorts, Parga has a life outside the tourist season and therefore has good facilities, including a number of supermarkets and mini-markets, bakeries, a laundry, several currency exchange offices and banks, and many tavernas.

The bay of Kryoneri beach (town beach) and next-door Piso Kryoneri beach is dotted with islets and emergent rocks. The largest of these is the tree-covered Panagia (Virgin Mary) island, with two churches – that of the Panagia by the jetty, and Agios Nikolaos by the little Ammopoulou beach – and a small Napoleonic fortification. The two large, upright sea rocks east of Panagia island are known as Kremyda and Skorda, Onion and Garlic.

The huge, 1 km-long Valtos Beach is backed by a steep ridge at the eastern, Parga end, and at the western end by olive groves and scattered accommodations in the valley which runs up to Anthousa. The southwestern tip of the bay has a small harbour and jetty, and a headland with the bell-towered ruins of the monastery of the Panagia of Vlahernon. The name Valtos means a marsh, and refers to the good supplies of underground water in the area. An older name for the bay is Hrysoyiali, the "golden shore".

Walk routes in the book include one to the beautiful inland lake and nature reserve of Kalodiki, plus walks into the Aherondas gorge, at the edge of the Souliot mountains near Glyki, where the icy waters are said to be those of the ancient Styx.

Large-scale sketch maps of Agia, Anthousa, Eleftheri, Lykhnos, Parga and Valtos are included within the text.

The 36-page book is A5 size, with a card cover. It is accompanied by an A3 double-sided colour walkers' map of the area, at a scale of 4cm:1km. Book and map are supplied in a tough A5 plastic sleeve.

Book first published 2000, updated autumn 2007; map published 2001, updated 2008.
