Walks in Olu Deniz

List of walks - pdf
This book describes routes through the pine-covered hills and plateaux around this resort on southwest Turkey's gorgeous Turquoise Coast.

Beautiful Olu Deniz (Ölü Deniz) is situated about 10km southeast of the large town of Fethiye. The resort itself has a sandy beach, which extends westwards into a sand-bar, separating the Mediterranean from the salty lagoon which is the real Olu Deniz ("dead sea"). Immediately behind the main beach is the resort area of Belcekiz, which extends north-eastwards before passing into pine woodland covering the steep slope up to the Hisaronu (Hisarönü) and Ovacik plateau.

The fourteen walks described include routes around Hisaronu; from Hisaronu through a lovely hidden valley to Fethiye; from Hisaronu to the ghost town of Kaya Koyu and thence down to Olu Deniz, or from Kinali to Gemiler beach; through the Ovacik gorge to a path along Mt Mendes Dag; via the pretty Akbel plateau and through a forest of mighty cedars to the bare rock summit of 1976m Mt Baba Dag. It also includes the nearby sections of the Lycian Way (one of the Sunday Times' "World's 10 Best Walks"), which can be completed as individual walks or combined - Olu Deniz to Kozagaçi to Kirme to Faralya to Kabak to Delikayya to Alinca.

The scenery of the area is often quite stunning - spectacular views of the coastline showing a sea that is genuinely turquoise, contrasting with the emerald green of the pine trees. Although Olu Deniz is a large, developed resort, and nearby Hisaronu and Ovacik even more so, the surrounding hills have their native woodland mostly intact, without the criss-cross scarring of dirt tracks that are now so common in much of Greece. The area has a good flora, combining Mediterranean and Asian elements, best in the spring, but with an interesting variety of autumn bulbs.

There is a wide range of walks from the comparatively easy to the moderately challenging. On most walks there is plenty of available shade from the ubiquitous pine trees. Some en route villages have café facilities, although these can be quite basic.

These walks are also possible from nearby Hisaronu and Ovacik. Many of the walks are also possible from Fethiye, Kaya and Okkacoy, using the local dolmus (minibus) services.

  • SKETCH MAPS of Olu Deniz and nearby Hisaronu, Ovacik, Kabak and Kabak Beach are included within the text.

  • The 32-page book is A5 size, with a card cover. The book is supplied in a tough A5 plastic sleeve.

Book first published 2002, updated 2003, plus an update, regarding the start of the Lycian Way, 2010.
