We will have a small quantity of home-grown seeds for sale this summer/autumn. All seeds offered are garden-grown - none are wild-collected - and we are not retailing any commercially-supplied seeds. These seeds are only available to buyers in the United Kingdom.
Magnolia stellata - star magnolia
A comparatively slow-growing, very hardy, deciduous magnolia, making a small tree (4-5m) with time.
The fragrant, white, multi-petalled flowers are small (for a magnolia), 7-10cm across, but profuse, appearing in spring - late March into April, as the foliage begins to appear.
Start the seeds individually in pots (c7.5cm) in the autumn, and plant out when approximately 10-15cm high. Prefers a medium to rich, well-drained organic soil, preferably in full sun. Sharp frosts can damage the flowers so avoid a very warm, sheltered south-facing wall that may bring flowering too far forward.
The time for germination can be very variable - if some germinate quickly don't discard the others. Some patience and care is required, but they are not difficult to grow.
The 10 seeds in this packet are large, about pea-sized.
