Lefkada walk book - updates 2007

UPDATE September 2007 to book dated 2002

In autumn 2007, work is under way on the northern extension of the Nydri by-pass through to Periyiali.

Walk 2 Periyiali Circuit.

In paragraph 4, the asphalt surface now continues, so you may prefer to retrace your steps on reaching the junction with the bend of an asphalt road in paragraph 3.

Walk 2A Nydri by-pass to Periyiali.

Most of this route has become a broad dirt road (which will become the new extension to the by-pass, though this should be useable until surfacing work starts. Replace the second and third paragraphs with the following:

At the northern end of the by-pass, continue onward over a low bridge – the old bridge is a short way off to the right. Go over a crossroads just after. Ignore several turnings off to the left and one to the right (by a building) until you reach a crossroads. Take the surfaced road to the right that leads through to Periyiali opposite the Madouri Beach hotel.

Walk 3 Vlyho to Yeni.

The road between Nydri and Vlyho becomes, briefly, a dual carriageway as it nears the Vlyho cemetery, boatyards and the Haradiatika (village) turning.

There are more tavernas, and a supermarket, in Yeni. The sign for Agia Kyriaki says, in Greek, “no wheeled transport”.

Walk 5 Nydri to Agios Donatos.

The “abandoned” church in Neohori village has been renovated.

The path exit from Eglouvi village is no longer passable. Continue up through the village to join the concrete road, but go left towards the church at the end. Turn right onto a path just before the church and go up to join a steep dirt track. Go right on the track and meet the main road above, by a building and shrine. The onward kalderimi path starts almost opposite.
