Walks in Lefkada and Meganisi

walk book for Lefkada and Meganisi
List of walks - pdf

This book features two of the islands off the northwest coast of Greece - Lefkada (Lefkas) and its eastern resort of Nydri/Periyiali, and nearby Meganisi island just a short ferry ride away.

Lefkada, on the northeast coast of Greece is the fourth largest island in the Ionian group. Still widely referred to as Lefkas, the island's older name derives from Leucas (“white”) from the white cliffs of the southwesterly point, Cape Lefkatas.

The interior of the island is surprisingly mountainous, reaching 1167m at Mt Stavrotas, and 1125m and 1157m at nearby Mt Elati and Mt Mnimati (some sources suggest Elati is the highest, at 1182m). To the north of the summits is a large sunken plateau, Livadia, with spring flowers and summer agriculture.

The large and, in season, very lively resort of Nydri spreads along several kilometres of the east coast road, from Periyiali to Vlyho, behind some narrow strips of beach. The quayside is busy with flotillas of small yachts, which find shelter in Vlyho Bay. Out to sea are a number of well-wooded, privately-owned islands. The hinterland of Nydri is a flat plain, mainly planted with olive trees, behind which the Mt Elati range rises steeply to over 1000m.

The five walks from Nydri include shorter routes to the waterfall valley at Rahi; above Periyiali; and along the Yeni peninsula to Agia Kyriaki or Desimi beach. A considerably longer, more challenging route goes high into the mountainous centre of the island, with some of the best rural scenery, and well away from the tourism of the busy coast.

The two walks on Meganisi, are based on the main ferry port and provide a circuit in the northwest corner of the island, and a circuit linking the two main towns. They can be done as a day-trip from Nydri, individually, or combined together.

There is plenty of shade, apart from the higher parts of the mountain walk, and most en route villages have café facilities. Humidity can be high.

The book also includes suggestions for interesting visits further afield on Lefkada using public transport or a hire-car.

  • SKETCH MAPS of Meganisi, and the Lefkadan villages of Eglouvi, Neohori, Nydri, Palaiokatouna, Periyiali and Vlyho are included within the text.

  • The 28-page book is A5 size, with a card cover. The book is supplied in a tough A5 plastic sleeve.
