Lance Chilton

Lance first visited Greece in April 1982, travelling to Plakias in southern Crete. Following another visit to Plakias in April 1983, he initiated and led guided botanical walks there from 1984 onwards, for SunMed Holidays. After giving up the day job in an insurance office in Bristol, he lived in Heraklion, Crete, from 1987 to 1991, working on the administrative side of SunMed which became Redwing Holidays and then part of Owners' Abroad (now First Choice).

Since setting up Marengo in 1993, he has been writing, drawing and publishing walk guide books and walk maps, and leading walks for the company. He has also led botanical and walks weeks for Cox & Kings, Holiday Pursuits, Inspirations, the International Dendrological Society, U3A and Wildlife Travel.

In addition to publications from Marengo, Lance compiled (with Nicholas J Turland) "Flora of the Cretan Area", published by The Natural History Museum/HMSO in 1993, and has contributed to articles in various international botanical journals. He has also written - and regularly updates - chapters of Rough Guides' "Europe", "Greece", "Greek Islands", and "The Pyrenees"; he has also updated APA Insight Guides' "Crete", "Greece" and "Greek Islands", and has appeared on Anglia Television's "Gardens For All".

Lance's main interest was in the flora of Greece and of the Canarian island of Gomera, although nowadays he has little spare time to pursue these interests. He has visited the following Greek islands: Aegina, Amorgos, Anafi, Andiparos, Andros, Angistri, Corfu, Crete, Delos, Donousa, Elafonisi, Elafonisos, Folegandros, Gaidouronisi, Ios, Iraklia, Kalymnos, Karpathos, Kea, Kefallinia, Kimolos, Kos, Koufonisi, Kythira, Kythnos, Leros, Lesvos, Milos, Mykonos, Naxos, Nisyros, Paros, Poros, Rhodes, Salamina, Samos, Santorini, Serifos, Sifnos, Sikinos, Skhinousa, Spetses, Symi, Syros, Telendos, Thasos, Tilos, Tinos, Ydra, Zakynthos, and the mainland areas of Akhaia, Argolida, Arkadia, Attiki, Ilia, Kavala, Lakonia, Korinthos, Magnisia, Messinia, Preveza and Thesprotia.
