Bellevalia dubia subsp. boissieri is a small bulbous plant, a close relative of the grape hyacinths (Muscari); the subspecies is native to the central and eastern Mediterranean, from Italy to Turkey. The flowers are a bright blue in bud, with purple red tips, changing to a chocolate brown with white tips as they age. The plant size is similar to that of the common grape hyacinth, but the plant is not invasive. April flowering.
It is happiest in a reasonably well-drained, dryish soil, in a sunny position. It has been hardy here in Norfolk for a number of winters, and has been unaffected by -6C in 2010 and 2011.
Seed gathered July 2011. Sow the seeds when received, in pots, keep indoors for the first winter and plant out in their second year.
My parent plants originated as seed from southern Greece.
There are about 25 seeds per packet.
