Anaxos is situated on the north coast of Lesvos, 9km south of Mithymna (Molyvos). The village is spread over a wide area, but with scattered buildings and much open space between most of the buildings, in contrast to the more concentrated built-up areas of Pétra.
Petra is a larger village, with an old heart centred around the Panagia Glykofilousa church, which is perched on a 35m volcanic plug. On the street circling to the north of the rock is the sunken 16th Century church of Ágios Nikólaos, with some well-preserved frescoes.
Accommodation. You can arrange your own accommodation in the Petra area through the Women's Agricultural Tourism Cooperative. Tel: 22530 41238; fax: 22530 41309.
